I thought our frequent visitors might enjoy learning a little more about alternative accommodations in the Caribbean, so I did a little research on available timeshares. It turns out that the Sandals chain I like so much actually owns a timeshare resort in Ocho Rios. Who knew? There are a lot of other islands in the Caribbean where there are timeshare resorts though including Puerto Rico, St. Lucia, Aruba and the Bahamas.

It seems like it is a lot cheaper to book a timeshare rental through an individual owner rather than directly through the timeshare resort. I looked at prices for the Marriott Aruba Surf Club on both its own website and a well-known by owner timeshare resale and rental website.

The price of renting a timeshare week on the rental site was a fraction of booking through Marriott. Depending on the season, Marriott was charging upwards of $400 dollars a night for a two-bedroom rental, while the by owner website had listings as low as $1500 a week. It seems like this is also the case for the site's timeshare resale inventory, so if you are thinking about buying a timeshare in the Caribbean, this is probably the way to do it.

Another one of the reasons I talk up the Sandals chain so much is because of their stay at one, play at all of their properties feature. We stayed at Sandals Negril but were able to have run of the house at all of their properties. It was a great way to see several places for the same price.
